Für diese Rezension wurde die gesamte erste Staffel berücksichtigt.
Wieder Hollywood. Hank schreibt, killt Ladies und zelebriert ein hedonistisches, destruktives Dasein mit Stil. Er liebt alle Frauen in L.A. und alle Frauen lieben Ihn, doch will er einfach nur zurück zu seiner Ex und vor allem zu seiner Tochter. David Duchovny als das sympathisch-witzige hardboiled Arschloch mit Drink in der Hand, der in der ersten Staffel brilliert.
Ok, wir kennen Akte X.
Ok, wir kennen Fox Mulder und ok, das ist David Duchovny und so wird es immer sein.
Möglich, ok.
Aber jetzt ist Californication da und es wird Zeit sich von Serienhelden Agent Mulder zu verabschieden und Hank Moody reinzubitten, der den gelegentlichen Alkoholismus wieder salonfähig macht und das Image des verstaubten Schreiberlings ordentlich umkrempelt.

Hank Moody ist Autor in L.A., und sein großartigster Roman wurde gerade eben vergewaltigt und als romantische Leinwandkomödie im Dreck liegen gelassen. Möglicherweise führte dieser Umstand zu der Schreibblockade, die den Hedonisten in ihm, einen ausgiebigen Ausritt gewährt. Drinks, Mädels, Dope, Mädels, Drinks. La vita é dolce! Aber nicht für Hank, denn sofort gäbe er alles auf um zu seiner Ex-Freundin Karen und vor allem zu seiner pubertierenden Tochter Becca zurückkehren zu dürfen. Auf seinem Platz hat sich jedoch bereits ein Langweiler breitgemacht – ein Mann mit einem Plan, ein Mann mit klar definierter Struktur in seinem Leben, ein Mann so not Hank Moody.

Ein wunderbares Element dieser Serie beruht nur auf der Konfrontation der beiden Kontrahenten. Ein gefundenes Fressen für Beide. Hank kann seiner Spitzzüngigkeit, in herablassenden, coolen und schmutzigen Sprüchen verpackt, freien Lauf lassen, während es sich für Langweiler [sein Name tut a) nichts zur Sache und b) gefällt er mir nicht so gut wie ‚Langweiler’] anbietet, Hank als versoffenen Taugenichts darzustellen, der niemals für die Familie so gut sorgen kann wie er.
Spontanität hat nun aber einfach mehr Sex, als ein Leben, das aussieht als hätte es der Steuerberater errechnet und deswegen gewinnt Hank auch insgeheim, auch wenn er am Ende der Folgen nicht mit der Traumfrau in den Sonnenuntergang reitet, sondern wieder einmal mit jemand anderes Traumfrauen sein Bettchen teilt.

Langeweile scheint übrigens, zumindest in Hollywood, keineswegs erblich zu sein, denn bei unserem Langweiler fällt der Apfel nicht nur kilometerweit vom Stamm, sondern hinterlässt auch noch einen beachtlichen Krater beim Aufprall. Denn Mia ist zwar des Langweilers Tochter aber durchaus kein Kind von Traurigkeit. Erst süße sechzehn und sie hat es faustdick hinter den Ohren und faustdicke Spuren hinterlässt sich auch auf dem Gesicht, ihrer geschockten Sexualpartner. „Fucking and Punching“
ist nicht die einzige nonkonformistische Lebensweise, die sie zu bieten hat. Mit ihrer rotzigen Schlagfertigkeit, Experimentierfreude und jugendlichem Leichtsinn lässt sie es krachen in L.A. und wer ist derjenige, der von alle dem weiß? Richtig…keine schmutzigen, schmuddeligen Geschichten ohne Hank.

Trotzdem versucht er, sich immer wieder aus solch sündigen Morast herauszuziehen und sich auf rührende Art seiner eloquenten Tochter Becca, die unter dem gleichen Dach wie das kleine Miststück Mia wohnt, wahre Werte des Lebens beizubringen. Schnell stellt sich heraus, dass Becca längst die richtigen Werte kennt und sie Hank neben ihr wie das eigentliche Kind aussehen lässt. Die Bewunderung seitens Becca gegenüber ihren Vater lässt jedoch niemals nach und somit ist das Töchterchen, wie so oft, der Grund warum Hanks und Karens Beziehung nie wirklich endete.

Eine Geschichte wie es das Leben seit Menschengedenken nun mal täglich schreibt. Seit Menschengedenken - so lange hat auch Charly nichts Gedrucktes mehr von Hank auf den Schreibtisch geknallt bekommen. Charly ist Hanks Agent. Er hat schon eine Menge Geld mit Hank verdient, aber die Betonung liegt auf der Vergangenheitsform. So versucht er nicht nur um der Freundschaft willen, Hank zu motivieren, neuen Leuten vorzustellen und letztendlich ihn dazu zu bringen, verdammt noch mal etwas zu schreiben.
Doch Charly hat in Californication nicht nur die Rolle des Freundes und des erfahrenen Autorenagenten zu spielen, sondern er ist der Garant für Sexualkomik in der Serie. Er war es in ‚Sex and The City’ und er ist es hier zum Quadrat. Die Charakterglatze ist prädestiniert dafür von einem Fettnäpfchen ins nächste zu hüpfen und dabei Sympathiepunkte beim Publikum einzuheimsen.

Obwohl er noch mehr Sex in die Serie bringt, ist er aber dennoch diesbezüglich ein Gegenpol zu Hank. Während Charly zu sehr und zu intensiv in der Rolle als aktiver Sexpartner aufgeht und somit zum Scheitern verurteilt ist, fliegen Hank alle Möglichkeiten nur so zu, was ihn natürlich die dementsprechende Coolness aufs Gesicht meißelt und ihn ‚gewinnen’ lässt. Gewinnen? Ja – oberflächlich. Denn Karen sein einzig ersehnter Preis in dieser Disziplin ist schon längst wiedergewonnen worden. Und wie das so ist mit Preisen – man gibt sie nicht so gerne wieder her.
Fazit:
Die Elemente, welche die Funktionalität der Serie stützen, sind gut und zeitgemäß gewählt. Komik wird vor allem durch die Dialoge vermittelt, in denen Hank nicht nur immer die Oberhand behält sondern die Gesprächspartner mit seinen Kontern förmlich pulverisiert. Sollten Worte einfach nicht angebracht sein, hilft oft ein Schlag in des Gegenübers Wortspender und somit ist auch schon ein interessanter Charakter geschaffen.
Die Sexualkomik, die das Grand des Inhalts an ‚Sex and The City“ ausmacht, ist hier nur ein sehr willkommener Nebenhandlungsstrang, der ein Schmunzeln und einen inneren kleinen Prüderieschock auch bei den Abgestumpften unter uns nach sich zieht. Den nötigen Kontrast dazu bietet die Erzählung der tiefen Liebe Hanks zu seiner Tochter und zu Karen.
In den USA hat die Serie für viel Aufsehen gesorgt. Obwohl auf dem Premium-Kabel-Kanal ‚Showtime’ ausgestrahlt, hagelte es Proteste. Und das in einem Land, in dem es ein eigenes gebräuchliches Wort für Sex zwischen Unverheirateten gibt. (‚fornication’ – so entstand stellvertretend für das ‚wilde’ Kalifornien das Portmanteau ‚Californication’).
Für stolze Mitglieder des örtlichen Prüderievereins mag die Serie stellenweise nicht nur gegen ihre Statuten, sondern vor allem gegen den guten Geschmack verstoßen. Aber da wir hier von einer Hand voll Szenen in einer ganzen Staffel sprechen und ich meinen Mitgliedsausweis verloren habe, ist für mich eine dahingehende Argumentation zu wenig, um eine gesamte Serie zu disqualifizieren. Vor allem dann wenn ich Sprüche höre wie: „I love women, I have all their albums.“
